Wood doors: dimensions, hardware and site conditions

A solid wood door is heavy, it moves, and it demands a properly resolved opening. What we check before building and what the site needs ready.

Weight changes every other decision

A solid wood entrance door has nothing in common with a light interior door. Weight determines the hinge type, the number of fixing points, the frame reinforcement and even the maximum sensible width.

When weight is miscalculated, the problem doesn't show up on installation day: it shows up months later, with the door dropping or dragging on the floor.

Exterior: species and protection

For exposed entrance doors we work hard species such as cumaru and tzalam, with moisture and pest protection on top of the aesthetic finish. Orientation matters: a door taking direct afternoon sun has different demands than one sheltered under an overhang.

What we need ready on site

Before installing, the opening must be finished, plumb and square; the floor laid and level; and wet wall finishes fully dry. Installing carpentry before that forces improvised adjustments that show later.

On new builds we coordinate with the architect or site manager so carpentry arrives at the right point in the sequence.

Adjustment doesn't end on installation day

Wood moves with humidity, and in the peninsula that movement is real. After handover we return to resolve the details noted in the final walkthrough, and if normal use knocks a door out of adjustment or a piece of hardware fails, we review it and adjust or replace it.
